Language Requirements

Language level and certificates needed for BIG registration

Dutch language level

Required level: B2 or higher according to the European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

Valid certificates:

  • NT2-II program
  • CNaVT medical profile
  • State exam NT2-II
  • CEFR B2 certificate from recognized institutions

Medical language proficiency

In addition to general language proficiency, you must also master medical terms and communication:

  • Medical terminology in Dutch
  • Communication with patients
  • Written reporting
  • Professional communication with colleagues

Validity

Language certificates are usually valid for 2 years from the date of issue. Make sure your certificate is still valid at the time of your BIG registration application.

Important note

AKV test abolished: The AKV test (General Knowledge of Dutch Public Health) has been abolished since 2022. Instead, you now need to obtain language certificates that demonstrate your Dutch proficiency at B2 level.

BI test overview

The professional test (BI test) is a comprehensive exam that tests your professional knowledge and practical skills as a dentist according to Dutch standards.

Important

BI test for dentists is organized only 2 times per year through ACTA. For doctors, the test is fully booked for 2025-2026. Early registration is recommended.

During the process you cannot work as a dentist in the Netherlands. You can do other work or work as an assistant under supervision.
What happens if I fail the BI test?
You can retake the BI test after 6 months. You must pay the full exam fee again.
Is there an age limit?
There is no specific age limit, but you must be physically and mentally able to practice as a dentist.
